The total population in the diocesan area was 2,506,990 as of the end of 2016. Tamils form the majority ethnic group here.

History

Pope John Paul II erected the new diocese of Dindigul on Nov. 10, 2003, carving it out of the diocese of Tiruchirapalli. Dindigul, the 17th diocese in Tamil Nadu, consists of 41 parishes. Among them 31 parishes were originally from Tiruchirapalli, six from Madurai archdiocese and four new parishes have been set up in the new diocese between 2004 and 2006.

The geographical area of the diocese is almost co-extensive with the civil administrative area of Dindigul district.

Political

Towns are governed by municipalities, while villages and small towns are administered by local bodies called panchayats.

Transportation

The diocesan area is well connected in terms of roads and railway. The nearest airport is in Madurai, the second largest city in Tamil Nadu.
