The diocese covers 3 downtown districts, 2 cities and 4 counties with an area of 9,411 square kilometers.
The vast majority of the population is the Han ethnic. In the census conducted in 2000, there were only about 22,700 people from 47other ethnic groups.
Besides official Mandarin, like the majority of areas in Zhejiang, most people from Taizhou speak a dialect of Wu Chinese, which is not mutually intelligible with Mandarin.
Erected as a vicariate apostolic in 1926, Taizhou was elevated to a diocese on April 11, 1946. The first apostolic vicar, Bishop Joseph Hu was among the first six Chinese bishops ordained by Pope Pius XI in 1926.
The church in Taizhou was seriously affected during the Cultural Revolution (1966-76) and there was no single priest in the diocese. Without a pastor, the flock received no formation and care, and the Catholic population started to age. Over the years, some pious and zealous Catholics helped claim the Church asset.
With the support from neighboring dioceses, seminarians were recruited and invited from the Shaanxi and Shanxi provinces. Then Father Anthony Xu was incardinated from the Ningbo Diocese and was named administrator to take care of the diocesan affair.
Taizhou was once a relatively inaccessible area. This has changed due to large infrastructure restructuring in the late 1990s and early 2000s. Presently, Taizhou is served by the Yongtaiwen Expressway, linking the city with Ningbo in the north and Wenzhou in the south. Huangyan Luqiao Airport in the city's Huangyan District serves daily flights to Beijing and Shanghai Hongqiao, and regular flights to other Chinese cities. In September 2009, the high-speed rail line, Ningbo-Taizhou-Wenzhou Railway, opened and Taizhou has several stations along route including the main station in Huangyan District called Taizhou Railway Station.
Taizhou has a subtropical monsoon climate. Regulated by the mountains on its west and the sea on the east, climate is wild with the absence of extreme hot summer nor severely cold winter. It has a yearly average of 16.8 degrees Celsius and an annual precipitation of 1,320 mm.
Taizhou is located at the middle of the coastline of the Zhejiang province. With the East China Sea to its east, Taizhou has a coastline of 651 kilometers.
The economic development in Taizhou is an exemplary model in China. It is characterized with 97 percent of privatized investment. The GDP per capita tops the list in the country.
Besides the rich fishery, the production of motor bikes and sewing machines are well known.
Geely AutoMobile founded in Taizhou which completed its acquisition of Volvo in 2010, is one of China's top ten auto manufacturers.
The Tiantaishan Temple where the Tiantai, (an important school of Buddhism in China, Japan, Korea, and Vietnam originates) is located here. In Japan the school is known as Tendai, and in Korea it is known as Cheontae.
Another tourist spot, the Linhai Ancient Great Wall, is the only Great Wall in southern China.
