Pope Francis appointed Monsignor John Saw Yaw Han as bishop of Kengtung Diocese on Nov 4, 2022. He succeeded Bishop Peter Louis Caku who died in 2020.
At the time of appointment, Bishop Han was serving as auxiliary bishop of Yangon and secretary-general and treasurer of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Myanmar.
Bishop Han was born on May 5, 1968, in Homalim, Sagaing division, now in Hakha Diocese. He attended St. Joseph’s Minor Seminary in Bago and did his studies in philosophy and theology at St. Joseph’s Major Seminary in Pyin Oo Lwin. He obtained a bachelor’s degree in geography from Bago College, Yangon, and secured master’s degree in moral theology from St. Joseph’s Seminary in Yonkers, New York.
He was ordained a priest on March 18, 1995, for the Archdiocese of Yangon. Bishop Han served as assistant parish priest at St. Andrew’s Church, Nyaungdone, (1995-1996); missionary Fidei Donum in Kengtung Diocese (1997-1998); professor at Institute of Philosophy, National Major Seminary, Pyin Oo Lwin, (1998-2000); assistant parish priest at St. Lazarus Church, Insein, and St. Mary’s Cathedral, Yangon, (2000-2001).
Bishop Han was professor at the Institute of Theology, National Major Seminary in Yangon (2004-2007); from 2008 to 2010, he was rector of St. Joseph’s Minor Seminary in Bago and from 2011 to 2014, Bishop Han served as rector of St. Joseph’s Major Seminary, Yangon.
