Pope Francis appointed Father Maurice Nyunt Wai as bishop of Mawlamyine Diocese on Feb 22, 2022.
Bishop Wai was born on Jan 23, 1962, in Myaungmya in Pathein Diocese. After attending minor seminary and secondary school in Pathein, he studied in the Yangon Major Seminary, while attending distance courses in art and science at the University of Yangon (1980-1987).
Later, he specialized at the Alphonsian Academy in Rome, earning a doctorate in theology (1997-2002). He was ordained a priest on March 11, 1989, and incardinated in Pathein Diocese.
He has held the following positions: Assistant in the parish of Myaungmya (1989-1992); professor in the Major Seminary in Pyin Oo Lwin (1992-1997); parish priest in Pathein (2002-2003); rector of the minor seminary in Mayanchaung (2003-2004); vicar general and parish priest of St. Peter's Cathedral Church in Pathein (2005-2013); executive secretary of the Bishops' Conference of Myanmar, (2013-2019); parish priest of the Sacred Heart Church (since 2019) and dean of the pastoral area of Myaungmya.
On May 31, 2023, Bishop Maurine Nyunt Wai succeeded as bishop of Mawlamyine.
