Bishop John Kim Son-tae has been appointed to lead South Korea's Jeonju Diocese as its eighth bishop.
Born on Sept. 15, 1961, Bishop Kim graduated from Kwangju Catholic University and was ordained priest on Jan. 20, 1989, for Jeonju. He studied theology at Fribourg University in Switzerland from 1991 to 1997 and obtained a doctoral degree on fundamental theology.
The Apostolic Nunciature in Korea announced March 14 that Pope Francis accepted the resignation of Bishop Vincent Ri Pyung-ho of Jeonju and appointed Bishop Kim as his successor.
Bishop Kim served as director for Jeonju Catholic Catechism Institute from 2001 to 2003 and from 2006 to 2009. In addition, he was parish priest for several parishes including Solnae, Hwasandong, Yeonjidong and Samchendong churches.
