Bishop George Madathikandathil was born in Purapuzha, near Thodupuzha, in Kerala in 1956 and ordained priest in 1980.
He taught canon law at the St. Thomas Pontifical Seminary of Vadavathor, where he also served as vice-rector and then rector for a long time.
Bishop Madathikandathil succeeds Bishop George Punnakottil, who resigned after serving the diocese for 36 years.
