Nepal bids adieu to last living Gurkha Victoria Cross recipient

Born in Chyangthapu, Eastern Nepal in 1939, Rambahadur Limbu enlisted in the 2nd Battalion of the 10th Princess Mary’s Own Gurkha Rifles in November 1957.

Lance Corporal Rambahadur Limbu was presented with his V.C. by the Queen at a ceremony at Buckingham Palace in 1966, accompanied by his five-year-old son Bhakta Limbu. Later in his service Rambahadur would rise to the rank of Captain (QGO), would become a Queen’s Gurkha Orderly officer in 1983, and would retire in 1985.

In 2014, after a visit to RMA Sandhurst, Rambahadur visited the Museum in Winchester where he met with staff and saw the display dedicated to Victoria Cross recipients.

Rambahadur Limbu spent his final years residing in Nepal where he was supported by The Gurkha Welfare Trust.

He died in Nepal on April 22 at the age of 83.
