The Archdiocese of Tharae Nongsaeng is located in Sakon Nakhon Province, northeast of Thailand. It covers an area of 25,447 square kilometers and four provinces
-- Kalasin, Mukdahan, Nakhon Phanom and Sakon Nakhon.
The archdiocese has three suffragan dioceses
-- Nakhon Ratchasima, Ubon Ratchathani and Udon Thani
-- all of them in the northeast of Thailand.
The archdiocese has a long history. It dates back to the Apostolic Vicariate of Laos, which was established on May 4 1899, responsible for all of northeast Thailand and modern-day Laos. The seat of the vicariate was at Nongsaeng village, Nakhon Phanom province. In 1938, the northern part was carved out to form the Apostolic Prefecture of Vientiane and Luang-Prabang. After the independence of Laos in 1949, the vicariate was split again, on Dec. 21 1950. The Laotian part became the Apostolic Prefecture of Thakhek, while the Thai part became the Apostolic Vicariate of Tharae. In 1960, it was renamed Vicariate Apostolic of Tharae and Nongsaeng, and elevated to an archdiocese on Dec. 18, 1965.
