Born on June 26, 1970, in Strasbourg, France, Bishop Olivier Michel Marie Schmitthaeusler, M.E.P was ordained priest of Paris Foreign Missions (MEP) on June 28, 1998. Bishop Schmitthaeusler went to Cambodia as a missioner after his ordination and started learning the Khmer language. He later became a pastor in the Takeo and Kampot areas towards the south of the country.
He served as the director of the Catholic Education Committee of the Phnom Penh apostolic vicariate from 2002. He was appointed the vicar general in 2007.
He established several schools and vocational training centers for the welfare of widows and young rural women. St. Paul Institute, a vocational training school in the Takeo province, for unprivileged students, was founded by him.
Father Schmitthaeusler was appointed as the coadjutor apostolic vicar of Phnom Penh by Pope Benedict XVI on Dec. 24, 2009. On March 20, 2010, he was ordained and installed as the coadjutor apostolic vicar of Phnom Penh, at Don Bosco Technical School in Phnom Penh.
Bishop Schmitthaeusler became the apostolic vicar of Phnom Phen on Oct. 1, 2010.
