Bishop Mar Joseph Kallarangatt was born on Jan. 27, 1956, at Kayyoor in Kottayam district of Kerala. He joined Good Shepherd Minor Seminary at Karoor, Palai. He was ordained priest on Jan. 2, 1982. Bishop Kallarangatt served as an assistant parish priest in Aruvithura and Ramapuram parishes. He was sent to Gregorian University, Rome, for higher studies in 1984. After a doctorate in theology, Bishop Kallarangatt taught at the St. Thomas Apostolic Seminary, Vadavathoor. He also served as the president of the Paurastya Vidyapitam. Following the resignation of Bishop Joseph Pallikaparambil, he was appointed as the third bishop of Palai on March 18, 2004.The episcopal consecration of Bishop Kallarangatt was on May 2, 2004 by Archbishop Mar Joseph Powathil and was enthroned by Cardinal Mar Varkey Vithayathil.
